Proverbs 28:19-20

19 Those who work their land will have abundant food,

but those who chase fantasies will have their fill of poverty.

20 A faithful person will be richly blessed,

but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.

Fantasies may offer us excitement, but in practice they rarely turn out as expected. A person preoccupied with chasing their dreams may be so enamored with fame, wealth and happiness that they overlook life’s practical necessities. There may be opportunity right in their backyard, but ambition has made them blind to it. Dreams are a good thing to have, but don’t let your pursuit of them distract you from the opportunities at hand.

“A faithful person will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.” Blessings and punishment both spring from relationships, where integrity is more important than ambition. The faithful person honors his commitments to others, sometimes to his own disadvantage, earning their blessing. But the greedy person compromises relationships for his own gain, deserving the punishment he gets. Whenever there is a tension between integrity and gain, there is more to be had by choosing integrity.
