Proverbs 13:17-18

17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble,

but a trustworthy envoy brings healing.

18 Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame,

but whoever heeds correction is honored.

It is a great responsibility to be trusted with news, and it is essential for messengers to maintain the truth. Not only for the sake of those on the receiving end, but also for their own sake, what use is a messenger without credibility? While “a trustworthy envoy brings healing,” dishonest news causes suspicion and conflict. If an agenda is not supported by the truth, it is always at risk of collapse. Be truthful, or at least don’t lie, or you are bound to fall into trouble.

“Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.” Truth ought to be given but also received, the rejection of honest feedback can be as self-sabotaging as the spread of deceit. What does it cost to heed correction? A little bit of pride? It is a bargain, because rejecting discipline will cost you all of your pride – and you will have nothing to show for it.
