Proverbs 27:18-19

18 The one who guards a fig tree will eat its fruit,

and whoever protects their master will be honored.

19 As water reflects the face,

so one’s life reflects the heart.

Work has its rewards, and there is dignity even in the basic task of looking after a fig tree. But even the simplest jobs can be difficult, as the cultivation of good things requires patience and diligence. Are you looking for honor? It is the fruit of faithfulness, and it cannot be rushed. The gardener knows the seasons and makes the most of them, as the wise do in all areas of life. What season are you in at work? The fruit will come, but it must be cultivated. Whether you are preparing the ground, planting the seeds, or tending to their growth – remember that the fruit will arrive in due time.

“As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart.” Most of us spend time every day contemplating ourselves in the mirror in order to improve our appearance. But happiness does not come from appearances, it is an issue of the heart. Are you as attentive to the blemishes in your heart as the ones on your face? Neither is pleasant to look at, but they cannot be addressed until they are seen. Look for the signs of envy, greed, anger and guilt in your life – and remedy them with gratitude, generosity, forgiveness and reconciliation. It won’t be easy, but your happiness depends on it.
