18 Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow
is one who gives false testimony against a neighbor.
19 Like a broken tooth or a lame foot
is reliance on the unfaithful in a time of trouble.
The club bruises, the sword cuts and the arrow pierces, and much harm can come from their misuse. This is also true with reckless speech, it too has the power to deeply wound. This issue is serious enough to have been included in the ten commandments: “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” There are many important values in life, and truth is essential to all of them. What good are faith hope and love if they are based on lies?
“Like a broken tooth or a lame foot is reliance on the unfaithful in a time of trouble.” The unfaithful are not only useless in times of trouble, they are also a source of anxiety. When it comes to relationships, here we have been given two simple standards to live by, and with which to choose our companions. Honesty and dependability are essential, overlook them to your own regret.
