9 The generous will themselves be blessed,
for they share their food with the poor.
It is a blessing to be protected from greed and envy, to be content with the things you have. This is what generosity offers: freedom from the anxieties of comparison and consumption. There is a great spiritual danger in wealth, it seeks to possess those who have it. But greed is a subtle vice, hiding behind excuses like “I’m just careful” and “maybe next time.” There is a simple way to determine whether your things have taken hold of your heart; how difficult is it to be generous with them? The more painful it is, the more necessary, if you hope to escape the bondage of greed.
