16 When the wicked thrive, so does sin,
but the righteous will see their downfall.
17 Discipline your children, and they will give you peace;
they will bring you the delights you desire.
Evil is cyclical. In times of increasing wickedness, despair tempts us to doubt things will ever get better. We must counter this with hope. And when peace flourishes, optimism tempts us to let down our guard. These are the times for vigilance. Fortitude protects the righteous from despair and passivity, they are resolved to resist temptation regardless of circumstances. Do not let yourself be caught up in the spirit of the time, or you will also be swept away with it.
“Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.” Life is full of consequences and boundaries. What peace is there for those who only protect their children from them? It is wise to prepare your children, with discipline, for what cannot be perpetually avoided. Keep them vulnerable and they will give you anxiety; ensure their competence and they will bring you joy.
