15 my son, do not go along with them,
do not set foot on their paths;
16 for their feet rush into evil,
they are swift to shed blood.
The wise father not only teaches his son which paths are worth pursuing, he also warns him of those which ought to be avoided. How long can one go along with evildoers without becoming like them? The longer they go without punishment, the further their character deteriorates. Regardless of whether you are caught, there is little to be gained and much to lose from such company. It is dangerous to imitate such people on your own – “do not set foot on their paths” – though they may seem to be enjoying themselves along the way, their paths lead only to destruction.
“For their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood.” Things tend to escalate quickly with such people, it may be difficult to avoid them from the outset but it is even more difficult to turn back once you’ve joined them. They are imprudent and intemperate, acting before thinking and challenging all limits. Do not get swept away with them! A moment of excitement is not worth a lifetime of regret.
