Meditations on the Book of Proverbs

12 Ears that hear and eyes that see—

   the Lord has made them both.

13 Do not love sleep or you will grow poor;

   stay awake and you will have food to spare.

 Though we have all been given the ability to perceive, it is up to each of us to listen and discern. What do you spend your time listening to? Who do you watch and imitate? It is through sight and sound that we are most influenced, for better or for worse. It has been said that “people don’t have ideas, ideas have people.” What sort of ideas do you let in through your eyes and ears? Which do you spread through your speech and actions?

 “Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare.” There is more to sleep than rest, it is also an escape from the burdens of consciousness. But with those burdens there is opportunity, to learn and grow and make the most of your life. Do you want better sleep? Be diligent while you are awake. Though the sluggard loves sleep he is never satisfied by it, because his other needs are inescapable.
