12 Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men,
from men whose words are perverse,
13 who have left the straight paths
to walk in dark ways,
What will save you from the ways of wicked men? Neither willpower nor techniques, which are the first resort of many. In the face of temptation wisdom allows you to see through the lies, while willpower only opposes desire. Techniques may help you evade temptation, but what help are they in the moment of weakness? The simple pursuit of wisdom will prepare you for the complexities of life like nothing else can.
“Who have left the straight paths to walk in dark ways.” It is wisdom that reveals our paths, as well as where they lead. Many who have left the straight paths cannot remember their point of departure, those who walk in dark ways cannot see where they are going. The wise can see danger from a long way off, but the wicked stumble right into it. In times of uncertainty listen to the Lord, ask him for wisdom, and obey him especially when it doesn’t make sense to you. You’ll be glad you did.
