10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
11 Discretion will protect you,
and understanding will guard you.
Do you pay more attention to your heart, or to your bank account? While wealth can be a good thing, it is also quite vulnerable. Those who fill their hearts with wisdom, however, have a treasure that cannot be taken away. In a world where external circumstances are beyond our control, it is wise to ground your well-being on things that endure.
Wisdom and knowledge are not only secure, they are useful in any situation. When things are going well, wisdom will keep you from missing opportunities. And when they aren’t, it will keep you from despair. Knowledge puts things in their proper perspective. Things could be better than they are, but they could also be worse.
“Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.” Discretion and understanding are proportional to wisdom and knowledge. They serve as protection not only from the dangers without, but also from those within. Often the troubles we face are self-inflicted. Discretion is the best protection from regret, understanding will keep you from shame.
