1 Do not envy the wicked,
do not desire their company;
2 for their hearts plot violence,
and their lips talk about making trouble.
The wicked may be wealthy. They may be healthy and strong, attractive and intelligent. They seem to have everything going for them, without much work. Less work than you at least. Life hasn’t been so easy for you. You’ve had to struggle to afford things, you’ve had to work hard to get by. You try to be responsible, to be disciplined, to be honest. But you see them living however they want, and getting away with it.
They’ve taken the easy path, but where is it taking them? Their hearts are corrupt, they are arrogant and shameless. They have everything on the outside, but they are rotten on the inside. Disaster is headed their way, and they can’t see it coming. When the storms of life come, they are caught unprepared. Justice catches up with them, and they are ruined.
What has become of your envy then? Has it turned to pity? You took the difficult path, but you’ve grown in character and know how to weather the storms. Your diligence has brought you joy, their carelessness has brought them despair. How silly it would have been to envy them.
